The Red Bull Music Academy is currently in session in South Africa, and they're throwing up content on their website thick and fast... Just found this half hour video interview from a couple of days ago:
--- Then it's Metro Area code 718 - the first lecture of the day to be given by Minto's pal and all round funky guy, Darshan Jesrani (see lecture stream here). The music of Metro Area is well known for having warm unquantized elements fused into something soulful yet electronic and spacey. Today Darshan shared some of his own favourites that fit this description, such as Freeez featuring John Rocca. He linked them to a discussion of the way in which early dance music and certain contemporary producers approached their composition. Darshan also had some excellent advice for budding producers on how to crack arrangement. He suggested ways to find the seed idea of music, in order to get yourself out of loop jail. 56K: http://www.redbullmusicacademy.com/ramfile/darshan_jesrani_56k.html ISDN: http://www.redbullmusicacademy.com/ramfile/darshan_jesrani_isdn.html DSL: http://www.redbullmusicacademy.com/ramfile/darshan_jesrani_DSL.html --- It's a nice little insight with Darshan spinning tunes and dropping plenty of knowledge and history. "One of the first things I did with my sampler was I sampled a beat from a U2 record and I taped the key down so it would repeat. And I'd play little sounds over it and I was like 'OK, I'm making music" :) The Academy site is well worth digging around in. There's production tips from Carl Craig and Dego, software demos by John Acquaviva and Ectomorph etc. Andy
