there is so much i wish i could pick up right now but i have to save my
moneys for gifts for stupid other people.
i did get advance copies of
iken - image of a drawn sword (realsoon #2)
dope dope dope! 10" which comes in a lovely green 78 sleeve. a-side is super
warm, funky, deep, just a little abstract house...totally up there with
kdj's latest stuff, leaning towards techno in all the right ways..b-side has
a very cool dubby cut, leaning towards dancehall, with great analog bits
floating around..niiiice!! last one on b-side is a beatless number built
around a nice jazz bass sample, some creaky ship sounds, lovely pads and
some more nice little sounds floating around...excelllent record. lovely
label too with green splotches on it, very classy..
ultramarine - carl craig remixes (realsoon #3)
yeahhhuhhh! the hooter remix hasnt aged a bit! great beat programming, nice
horn sample, classic cc sounds, ohh those rolling beats...comes off like
some subtly tropical house azz-shaker, and a little towards paperclip people
stuff maybe even..also a nice beatless cc remix of hooter is included as
well, lovely. b-side has cc remix of "source", which does sound old, but
still great, classic detroit house sound, dope chezntrent style bassline,
bangin beats and simple chords, some lovely pads and strings...very well
arranged, keeps introducing new bits, doesnt get repetitive. b2 is another
very short beatless remix, well more of a filtered outro of "hooter"...
2 essential records..!
also
labrat xl - mice or cyborg (clone)
ohhh yeah this is very good, i think it edges out the abstract thought as my
favorite out of the 7 storms. more abstract and thoughtful than the old
drexciya jams still, but just great sounds and beats, real songs. super sad,
lovely soaring "whale calls" and skittery beats and little chord jabs in
labrat1, dope house speed overdriven 808 beats in labrat2 with a classic!
grungey drexciyan bass and spooky sounds from within the bubblecruiser and
some pitched around vox "if you're good to go let your body show"...labrat3
goes more smooth and funky, towards older drexciya, verrry nice...labrat4 is
super slow plodding electro with spacey meandering chords and thick gurgling
bass..labrat5 heading towards industrial techno, loads more great
sounds..labrat6 brings out the sk beats and some deeep sad underwater pads!
a really really really great album and close to the 7 storms and james
stinson's legacy...
looking forward to hearing those new submerge ones, they all sounded very
good..and i think i will have a lot of fun with doubles of dope computer :)
