I like how defensive you guys all got about this. I made a simple
statement that they somehow managed to drop attendance from 1M to 600K
and I think it was for good reason. They've lost all the excitement of
the lineup and managed to take it from one of the most exciting
festivals ever organized to something I only went to for one night last
year. Carl Craig booked a diverse lineup that you couldn't see
anywhere
else in the world whereas last year they must've done all the bookings
out of a Detroit white pages from 1996.
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Dude, Doris needs to drag you out here to LA to come visit yussel
sometime.
YOU. CAN'T. SEE. THESE. PEOPLE. OUT. HERE. ANYTIME. PERIOD.
Of the acts from last year that Fred listed to refute you, I can think
of maybe *15* that have appeared in LA, *ever*.
I can't believe the complaints I see about Movement/DEMF on this list
sometimes - "Wauugh, the festival's so lame, I only went one day".
(Personally, I thought 2003's festival was a LOT better than 2002's.
Endless Eminem video advertisements anyone?)
Stay home then and let those of us who *never get to see these people*
come and enjoy it. To me the DEMF/Movement is a celebration - a
celebration of the music, the people that make the music, and a
celebration of Detroit and the great people that live there. I come
from 2000 miles/3200 km away and spend a ton of money to get there
and stay there every year, and it's worth every penny and every minute.
There is NO comparison to DEMF/Movement anywhere in North America.
Coachella? Too Rock-oriented, and too damn hot (ever try listening
to music when it's over 100 F out, and your whole body is dripping?).
WMC? Don't make me laugh. Mutek? I'm sure it's great, but ...
As for it not turning a profit ... doesn't anyone remember the $3
(that's about half a quid or 1 Euro ... oh, wait, not quite that bad
yet? Just give the dollar and Dubya a few more weeks and it will be)
Movement buttons from last year? You all bought yours, RIGHT?
If 600,000-odd people had ALL bought buttons like they should've,
that would've been over $1.8 million in the Movement coffers. Anybody
that can't/won't cough up $3 for a button doesn't deserve to go, IMHO.
I gladly pay 75 Euros for Sonar every year and I think it's a bargain -
and as far as "Charging admission will make attendance plummet" goes,
well Sonar gets bigger and bigger every year - too big, I think - and
it's 75 Euros more than Movement is.
