Interesting! I love that Alicia song, it's so romantic! I get caught up in it and the production takes you back... I get the same feeling with Moodymann's The Thief... D May's Winter of The Blvd... They stir me up! But actually the song I like best on Keys' sophomore is When You Really Love Someone. I remember the first time I heard her in '96 (?) on the Men In Black OST and she's come so far as a songwriter.
Someone asked about a 'Maya'. Do you mean Mya? She's an R&B singer from Wash DC. I didn't think much of her early work, but, while no singer, she's developed a sassy style. You may have heard her Missy produced hit My Love Is Like... Wo? The Fugees representing refugees? Well, two members are Haitian, so they are cultural refugees. But it's a valid point on the money poured into the clip... With R Kelly, the guy is so prolific... but he is an unsurpassed songwriter. I am so not into his car analogy club joints ;) but his gift in capturing an ambiguous sentiment in a song - or even empathising with women - can be astonishing. Changing Faces' GHETTOUT, Sparkle's Be Careful, his own A Woman's Threat. I couldn't stop talking about his definitive R album when it came out. He has a song on his recent hits collection Touched A Dream which has an old soul dance flavour... A funky little dance edit of that would be sooo sweet. There are different points of entry into techno/house. For me Mary J Blige and Moodymann are not so disparate culturally, sonically. I hear a similiar rawness, texture and depth. There is so much good contemporary R&B/soul - Jill Scott, Donnie, Vivian Green (with Osunlade producing too!), Aaliyah, Kelis... ---------- >From: "Katrin Richter" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >To: "Andrew" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, <[email protected]> >Subject: AW: (313) Techno's Voice >Date: Thu, 11 Mar 2004 1:26 AM > > Weird, it's always on the radio here (which is probably why I so strongly > dislike it - they never leave you alone to let you discover music, it's just > pushed onto you whether you're in the mood for some Babybabybaby business or > not) and it has this breakdown after the second chorus because then she > decides to take affirmative action and phone the guy (something a girl > wouldn't do, normally, but hey, it's kinda crayyyyzehhh).... > > Blurb!
