Alright - so we walk into the auditorium and right after going through the
ticket gate both me and my wife are handed brand new sealed copies of
"Musicology"
Listening to it right now (finally) - It's excellent actually (nevermind
the critics) anyone know if it's available on vinyl?
I might go check Brother Jules' shop (he's the Paisley Park house DJ) on
Lake Street - if you're a Prince fan and you come to Mpls, you must stop in
there.
so anyway - our seats were in the nosebleed section but luckily they had
jumbo screens on all sides - the stage was in the form of an X or t
depending on your point of view.
so the Time opened up and were fantastic - if they are on with the rest of
the tour you guys are in for a treat.
afterwards the lights went up and there was an intermission then when they
went dark again (about 20 minutes later?) they started rolling a sort of
short history of Prince on the jumbo screen - going all the way back to his
first appearance on American Bandstand during the "For You" era - all the
way up through his name change and the "slave" thing - up to Alicia Keys'
presentation of his inauguration into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame -
finally when she says "there have been many kings but there is only one
Prince" the lights went up on the stage and the NPG were there and then
much flashing of lights and serious jamming by the NPG and suddenly
- there he was.
raspberry purple long coat with one side longer than the other, white shirt
with purple poka-dots (or that's what it looked like from outerspace where
we were), and the best damn high-heeled boots a man could ever wear - white
boots and the heels were studded with rhinestones (the camera picked them
up on the jumbo tron during his acoustic set). Totally glam.
Started right into Musicology and then went through a three or four song
medley of hits.
Since I can't recall everything that happened last night I managed to find
a page online where someone posted much better notes than I made
so here is Prince's set from last night (there is also this person's
account of the afterparty at Paisley Park that I did not go to but I
included it for our entertainment):

Prince attempts to pull a rather hefty woman onstage to dance (no offense,
but her size was an obvious point). He fails, makes a comedic moment out of
it, and once she climbs onto the stage they dance together for a moment.
She could move, to the delight of the audience and Prince.

A Love Bizarre
As in previous shows, Prince lounges around in a chair that's part of the
set. Chance brings over a blanket and a magazine -- the recent RollingStone
featuring Prince on the cover. After paging through a few articles, Prince
flips to the feature article on himself, and points to the highschool
yearbook photo printed in the article and looks for an audience reaction.
Cheers, jeers and a few funny faces later, the show continues.

Paisley Park (June 18 A.M.)
When I arrived at about 1:30am, the night's concert was playing on the
projection screens in the NPGMC room while the DJ spun records for the
soundstage. When A Love Bizarre was playing, they cut the concert audio and
the band started to play in the soundstage. After tweaking the audio at the
soundboard, Prince joined the band in the middle of the first song.

The Aftershow [2:15-3:50am]

then joined the band on cowbell)
Dear Mr. Man (featuring an extended sax intro by Maceo Parker)
I Know You Got Soul [Charles A. Bobbit, Bobby Byrd, James Brown] (feautring
Prince on bass guitar)
Skin Tight [The Ohio Players] (featuring Prince on bass guitar, and a
vocalist from the TC Jammers on vox)
D.M.S.R. (featuring Prince on guitar for the rest of the show)
House Party [Fred Wesley]
Sexy Dancer
Peach (blistering guitar and great vox by Prince)
Prince And The Band
Beautiful Strange (awesome guitar and vox by Prince)
While the whole set was amazing, the end of the show was really quite
astonishing, playing the new arrangement of Peach and Beautiful Strange
like I'd never heard before. He worked the Hohner guitar till it was
blazing, and then ended the show, leaving us all wanting more.

He had so much energy all night - his guitar playing is out of this world -
the band was tight - he got the moves of James Brown in his youth
That's it - Detroit - get ready for Prince!
