I live in Chicago and I'm pretty surprised myself. Not sure how to celebrate. House is ubiquitous here... but, by the same token it is very commercialized and mainstream and most of what I hear is quite generic. Even the better house often occurs in fairly tacky clubs without any kind of vibe, or else nobody is there or nobody is dancing. Often it seems that there are a lot of people out that aren't really heads and so it is kind of weird, like they would be happy with anything with beats. Overall I think people here respond better to hiphop and R&B then house, despite Chicago's deep history.
That said, there are some good people coming through every once in a while that I keep missing (recently, a metro area DJ set I think?). Hopefully I'll catch more of this then I have so far, I've been in Chicago about a year. ~David ---------- Original Message ------------- Subject: Re: (313) Chicago honours Frankie Knuckles Date: Wed, 7 Jul 2004 16:22:19 +0100 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [email protected] >better be careful though. you don't want to end up with aphex twin day in >cornwall or something. yeah, ha! that would be relatively mental no doubt. On Frankie Knuckles, there's some great anecdotes and tales about him in the book "Love Saves The Day". Have list peeps read this book? (by Tim Lawrence) It's one of the best music related books I ever read, and I urge everyone to read it, it's brilliant. Pretty mad really that they would honour him like this! Not that I think it's not well deserved at all. How will you chicago heads be celebrating "Frankie Knuckles Day" then? _________________________________________________________________ --------------------- End of message text -------------------- This e-mail is sent by the above named in their individual, non-business capacity and is not on behalf of PricewaterhouseCoopers.
