Mills & Garnier go back (to back) to the future
12/08/2004
Jeff Mills and Laurent Garnier have announced details of a 13 date joint
European tour at which
the legendary DJs will be performing 7 hour back to back sets of deliberately
eclectic retro and
new music, they revealed this week.
?It?s not a techno tour, it?s not a house tour, not a disco tour, but we just
play what we think
is emotionally rich,? Mills told Australian magazine Onion.
?It can be anything from Afro-Cuban to reggae-dub to rock & roll to house and
hip hop.?
As well as playing in Serbia, France, Belgium and Germany (four dates) the duo
will be appearing
at London?s Fabric on Thursday September 16, spinning from when the club opens
at 9pm right
until it closes its doors at 4am.
Speaking to the East London club this week, Mills described the club scene as
being ?stagnant?,
suggesting both the music industry and media are too conformist.
?In a strange way, the electronic music scene either forgot that it did not
have to play by the
rules of the major label structure, or never knew that at all,? he suggested.
?I've noticed that for the past ten years, sounding similar to some other
producer or copying
that persons style has become acceptable, and, in some cases, rewarding.?
