Ok, Tom, I hear what you're saying about MF Doom's MCing style. I've heard
someone else say something similar (and they actually like this stuff.)
There is a certain flatness to his expression and I think I agree, it's not
his greatest strength (which is quite a minus given that he's a rapper!). I
feel the quirkiness and even creepiness of some of his lyrics go some way to
making up for this though. And I disagree with you about his 'beatmaker'
status. If you mean by that production, and general 'swinginess', I think
he's up there amongst the best right now. His songs are tight and also he's
not afraid to push the boundaries in terms of the texture and sounds he
uses. It's still quite rare to hear straight-up-in-the-mix synths in Hip Hop
(granted there are a lot of samples of course, but it's not all sampled, I
think).

You might want to have a listen to the Viktor Vaughn LP too if you haven't
already, which is just as good as the Madvillain LP I think, although
perhaps darker and not so quickly accessible.

I should say that next to most afficionados, I know next to jack about Hip
Hop, but I'd like to think I've still got a point in the above.

Cheers,

k
