Someone on the DeepHousePage asked Francois Kevorkian to provide some info about his early dj spots before his prelude days etc. Anyway, I found it quite interesting, and thought some here might like to read. It wasn't covered in "Love Saves The Day"
So here it is: "Got started in early '77 at Experiment 4 (where I was primarily cleaning, doing the coat check and whatever else), and subbing for Jellybean here and there, although not for long. During that time, won several DJ contests held at G.G. Knickerboker, a famous drag-queen place (formerly Hollywood) where I got noticed by some enterprising promoters who had something called 'Chase Galleries' (James Rice and Greg) who got me to play for them at Buttermilk Bottom. In the Summer of 77, Chase Galleries put together a fierce weekly event called 'Sesame Street' which took place at THE FLAMINGO, hallowed ground for all that was gay and (mostly) white, but since they all went to Fire Island during the Summer, we were able to have parties there until mid-September. This was at the same time The Garage was about to begin its 'construction parties'. They were so successful that they then managed to rent a midtwon ballroom on West 43rd street at (? The Diplomat Hotel?) which was big enough for 2000 people. Within 3 weeks, this turned into a very nasty scene there, with strongarm Italian types demanding 'protection', and I was out of there. (returned the favor to Jellybean and gave him that gig) Got a regular gig doing the Saturday nights (quickly turned into a 5-nights-a-week thing) at New York, New York, which although wasn't that great compared to the vibrant downtown crowd, paid the bills and kept a roof over my head. That's about it.... I am not sure how much more of this type of questions I can answer, I sadly don't have that much time to do it in detail, and it'll all be available when I (finally) make my site public. It does take time to compile a lot of this info, which I am in the process of doing right now. Peace and Gabber.
