With a record collection virtually creeping over the den, Spencer has been
known to frantically rearrange every 12 during the 36 hours preceding a
gig, always sussing for the elusive perfect selection. An intense passion
for accomplished electronic music led him to conceive Itiswhatitis
Recordings, founded in January of 2001. The name itself is patronymic; a
nod of the head towards a techno grandfather, Derrick May, and his catalytic
1988 track of the same name.
A dj since the early 90s, Spences electronic tastes germinated in a pool
of Detroit Techno, early Chicago house and Warp bleepage. Drennans musical
tastes were a logical evolution from a childhood steeped in the traditions
of jazz, funk and rock. Spencers attention to detail provides a lens with
which to isolate the quality while dispensing with the quantity. Not one to
sanctify his records, Drennan favours the purge policy for the tracks he no
longer feels. Counted among his current side projects is an online record
store managed with long-time friend and business partner Frank Kozo, an
effective outlet for his gems of yesterday as well as a goldmine of
rarities, whites, and promos for the fledgling or avid collector. (Im)
always junking out for more and always critiquing in a way, adds Drennan,
I'm slightly opinionated when it comes to music, but I try not to make a
point of slagging anything. Its just personal taste at the end of the day.
I only know what I want from my beats.. Depending on which hat he dons,
Drennan could be found busting a hard techo set at an Urban Development
party in San Francisco, a deep electro/idm selection for one of Western
Canadas legendary outdoor events, or even dropping a chorus of deep and
classic house gems in one of Vancouvers or Montreals house/techno rooms.
With an ability to segue many genres in a set of movement and inspired
selections, Drennan has been booked consistently at events from Detroit to
Korea, San Francisco to Toronto.
