I dunno Cyclone, I might have to disagree with you here! While there
isn't much of a directly 313-related scene, Canberra has a very small
but tight underground that comprises lots of different elements of
underground music.

I played at a party at the art school down there last October and it
was pretty solid - there were three rooms, one with bands, one with DJs
playing lots of different styles from jungle/dnb to minimal tech to
freaked-out house and so on and then there was an experimental room with
all kinds of interesting live performances. There's quite a lot of
producers in and around Canberra - including some world-class talent -
though a couple of the guys who've really helped push alternative music
have recently moved out of town.

Because there's so few people into anything but mainstream choons, they
all band together and so you get much more diversity in styles at the
alternative parties - when Jeff Mills played Canberra recently he was
supported by DJs spinning House, Broken Beat and Electro, and
consequently delivered a set that was much more diverse than his other
Aus outings, more in line with his recent tour with Garnier than the
straight-up tech we got in Sydney (not that I'm complaining!).

There might not be a million parties every single week, or month, in
Canberra, but there's a good grassroots community of passionate peeps
down there that you'll probably get on quite well with. Lemme know when
you're going and I'll hook you up with some heads.
