whats up detroit techno posse. It's been a good run of djs here in the bay area for the last bit so I thought I'd share. Apologies in advance for any potential 313 irrelevancy.

Last week DJ Hell came and played a mix of ebm 80s style techno, electroclash, a little obscure pop/hiphop and some tracky acidbizness. Last friday Surgeon played a laptop set at a warehouse party in Oakland. All in all it was a thrill to be able to hear Surgeon play but because of some predictable breakdowns and noisy twiddling interludes the intensity was not what I had hoped for. On Saturday, Norman Jay–londoner of KISS FM fame–was in town but I missed it. On Sunday I saw Timmy Regisford of Shelter which also has absolutely no relevance to 313 at all, but was full of astoundingly long flawless mixes though musically predictable. Yesterday, Herbert djed at a club that caters primarily to an indie rock crowd. I was hoping for a crazy live set involving politics, food, microphones and laptops but was pleasantly surprised by a quirky shuffling set of techno and house. I was impressed by Herbert's smooth and well timed mixing. He was seamlessly bringing elements of the records together, working the turntables and fist shaking to the nasty beats. I didn't see a final scratch setup either. I had always thought of him as somewhat of a orignality snob like many traditional musicians who go into dance music and I assumed he would have a disdain for tracky techno. So I give him props for playing some pretty minimal tracks (especially considering the crowd) as well as a cover of a tom tom club song, some chicago classics, and idm inspired dance music (Maurice Fulton's Paris Hilton track, and a track from Thomas Brinkmann's soul center).

Tomorrow Abe Duque is playing at Mighty with DJ Harvey and locals (www.seisix.com) also Sasha will be playing on his custom art deco ableton controller at Ruby Skye, and Louie Vega of MAW is djing at DNA lounge. Coming up, I'm looking forward to seeing Brennan Green of Balihu NYC on March 5th at Pop (dreamchimney.com/pop). Also performing is a live act that I am unfamiliar with but am told good things about called Brown Rainbow. I think Legowelt and a bunker records dj will be playing in two weeks at a small little bar called el 222 club. Then Matthew Dear is coming back in April. After that I figure the anticipation of a Mr. De certified fuse-in will get me through the rest of April and early May.

Over and out.
