I think the pleasure to be had is knowing that someone is there controlling the 
floor with their music. Knowing that they aren't there would spoil it somehow - 
like when they used to do ISDN sets from Fuse in Belgium at The End in London - 
even though it was 'live' it just didn't quite work somehow. But strangely I 
can have the best night out ever with my back turned from the DJ, though it is 
also great  to see the DJ bopping away enjoying himself.

Interesting concept. Would you apply the same thinking to a turntabalist?
Does a live band need to put on a show if the music in itself is wholly
sufficient. If you take it one step further then why bother with DJs at all?
You may as well just play pre-recorded mix CDs in clubs, at least that way
you can guarantee a flawless, perfectly mixed set of all the best music.
