I think most people in Europe are aware of them, but only to the extent that if 
you mention them to a non-cognoscenti, they tend to raise their eyebrows and 
make stiff armed movements and say 've ar de robots'.

Indeed.  My three-year-old son loves Kraftwerk and likes to sing "Robots"
at preschool.  His teachers were baffled when Mr. Tom Cox and I tried to
explain his fascination with a bunch of kooky Germans.  It's really quite
surprising how few people have heard of them.
