Subject: RE: (313) melodic electro?
Loads of excellent melodic electro coming out in the UK over the last 2
years and should continue this year, from what I can see.
Some recentish cuts I'd recommend:
Pixellated Vision:

Nothing short of brilliant in my view and fits your
'old-school-but-not-too much' criteria very well, I'd say
Michael-Elliott. Yes it's got 808s and all that as it's bedrock (real
ones it sounds like, to me) but there's also a modern, minimalistic,
virtual-analog feel running through it too. One of the best electro LPs
of this decade so far for me.
I'd also check Dez Williams

I can recommend anything by this boke with confidence, but this my
favourite thing by him. Lots of melody, lots of unexpected twists and
turns and lots of layers. Plus it's fresh and clean and dark and dirty
in all the right places.
I know you're already acquainted with Jacen Solo:

But that again is the one to look out for. You'll probably have to buy
it second hand though, if it really was as limited as the blurb
suggests.
Finally look out for this , which should be widely available in March.
It will be a good and up to date over view of a label which ought to be
right up your street.

It also contains (I think) the first track to be released by Plant43,
who's definitely worth watching, whether I'm biased by being his mate
or
not!

I'm *really* feeling that first track on the Studio Pankow album from
that mix I just posted. Well, the whole album for that matter, and it
isn't all electro, but I guess this first track would be more electro
than techno.
Oh, and that guy we saw at The Telegraph in August was really good, if
that's what you're looking for???

I've been going through lots of my electro records lately - some of
them are going to be on sale in a few short days so keep your head up
if you like electro
Anyway, I was trying to figure out what I liked about some electro and
what I don't about lots of others. I find lots of electro seems to be
dependent on weird noises over an 808 and not much else. Oooh, dark
and spooky vocoders and such. Too much is just so retro and I do
believe that you can keep the spirit of electro alive without sounding
like you're back in 1981.
The stuff I really like has some kind of melodic element to it -
that's one reason Kraftwerk stands out from what has followed (not to
mention that so many electro artists are riding Kraftwerk's coat
tails). What I like about much of the Detroit electro is that it
hasn't forgotten this. I can find the melody right on top or in the
basslines.
So - I'm re-exploring the world of electro and trying to find stuff
that is more melodic and goes beyond the noises.
Any suggestions?
