We just had Modeselektor play for us here in Sydney and they were really bloody good. They've been playing live for AGES now and are really tight. They put on a great show, and their sound is just so fkin HUGE!

It's not straight-up tech, more along that electronic dancehall/ junglist sound that's coming out of the states a fair bit at the moment (think Shockout/Mashit, Kid606-style stuff) but it definitely references the detroit sound, which they're both big fans of; I had a good chat with the guys and they were wistfully reminiscing about seeing UR back in the day when it was Mills, Hood and Banks.

They're playing a bunch of dates in the states at the moment, including an afterparty at DEMF and then they're off to Mutek. Definitely check these guys out. One of the best live acts I've ever seen.

And also props to Lidell, Andy Vaz and Monolake as well, all of whom I've seen this year and really rated.

Subject: (313) techno live acts

and you're allowed to add a short line why

Jeremy Ellis and John Arnold
-simply the best live performance I've ever seen. Two people making 98% of the sounds that come out of the speakers on the fly. Live moog, singing, 2xMPC, guitar and whatever else they decide to throw in. Music so good it
makes me goofy

Jamie Lidell
-ditto, except I'm only slightly less enthused

But maybe you mean proper techno???

Shawn Rudiman
-More traditional techno/electro, but also doing it mostly on the fly, with
a preference for MACHINES

Sendex
-ditto

Carl Craig
-Be it Innerzone, Detroit Experiment, his best-of thing he did last year or
whatever the incarnation, it's good

...and a fair share of pretty damn good laptop PAists.

I dunno man, there are a lot to chose from these days, and a lot of poo. But I've seen far too much good music in the last few months to worry about that. I need a break. Live highlights of the last month would have to be
Henrik Schwarz and Convexion. Can't ask for much more than that...
