Sorry if this is a repost, I don't think it went through the first time...

I made the 300 mile trek from Chicago to Detroit last weekend to catch the 2nd ISF gig. The show was definitely worthy of a review and since I don’t ever remember seeing an ISF review on the 313 before here it goes:

We got to Alvins about 1 hour after the doors opened and the Fugitives were still performing their sound check. I hadn’t been to Alvins in years and the place hasn’t changed a bit. It is right across the street from Wayne State University on Cass Ave. It is a very small concert venue with a bar up front and a stage in the back. After we took a seat at the bar we were treated to random UR beats played over a Dave Matthews CD for the next hour or so. The best part was hearing a bona fide ‘Mike’ check ;) I had heard there was a little trouble at the first show hearing Atlantis’ and others voices over the mic. There was no problem with the mic this time around.

Once the sound check was over the lights were dimmed and BileeBob took the decks. He played for about 30 minutes. His set consisted of mostly spacey, driving techno tracks that I hadn’t heard before. He did drop Prince in the middle of his set and ended with Red Planet’s ‘Firekeeper.’ All in all his set was a great warm up for the Fugitives.

Atlantis came on and did his Order & Chaos intro from memory over the track of the same name. Ever since I first heard ‘Order & Chaos,’ with its sick, eerie baseline I’ve been dying to hear it over a big system. The sound system was very nice. They had a row of 8 speakers lining the stage and a quad speaker setup over each corner of the dance floor. As soon as the Fugitives came on everyone that was mingling by the bar came up front and started dancing. Literally everyone who was there was dancing and it was great to feel that vibe and be a part of it.

UR continued to rock the living hell out of the place for the next hour and a half. The next track was a dope version of ‘Amazon’ with some dudes in full African gear playing live drums. It was awesome. UR has produced some of the most utterly powerful techno tracks I have ever heard and hearing them performed live adds SO much more. The ‘Moor Horseman’ track with Mike’s crazy Middle Eastern keys followed along with a nice breakdown of ‘Timeline.’ Agent Chaos then got on stage and sang the lyrics to a track that I hadn’t heard before. It was very electro.

The Unknown Solider busted out ‘The Streets’ while a small group from the crowd chanted ‘Schoolcraft, Schoolcraft’ and they ended with ‘Crackzilla.’ There may have been another track or two played that I’m not remembering. The band consisted mainly of Mad Mike, the Unknown Solider, DJ Skurge and Frankie Fultz. Frankie worked the video from a laptop for the whole show. The video is definitely much improved from their DEMF performance last year. A lot more content has been added. There was some new outer space travel footage and during Crackzilla some wacky Godzilla clips were played. It was an awesome live performance overall.

Mark Flash got on stage and started spinning once the Fugitives were done, but we opted out for some Coney dogs instead. I really hope they play the states more often as more people need to hear them. This was the best live set I’ve seen this year, by far. –out.
