I'd have to relisten to my Logic System material to make one pick (HIstory Of
is a safe Bet) but for Hosono, S-F-X, Philharmony and Mercuric Dance (the last
is ambient, the others *not* - they're prime early/mid-80s technopop). The
Globule/Making of Non-Standard Music ep is also killer. F.O.E. stuff is pretty
good.
Sakamoto (there's a ton!): I like a lot of the collabs w/Sylvian, Dolby & Robin
Scott, but B-2 Unit should not be missed.
I would also suggest investigating some of the older, compiled things like
Fururista, Illustrated Musical Enclyclopedia and Esperanto.
On this whole tip, Masami Tsuchiya's Rice Music (all of YMO, some Japan
members, Bill Nelson guest) and Sandii & The Sunsetz' Heat Scale and Immigrants
aalso feature YMO in the studio and on the knobs.
Of course, there's a *ton* of YMO offshoot projects that are all worthy
(including Human Audio Sponge, which is Takahashi & Hosono with Sakamoto along
for the ride - YMO reconstituted), but that's as good a start as any.
