I may be misremembering this, but didn't Monsieur Richie De La Hawtin
provide music for Susur Lee's super-fancy, minimal-fusiony, eponymous
restaurant in Toronto? I'm sure you can dump a whole bucket of snark
on that particular situation, but I remember the music working really
well with the décor when I ate there in 2004.

the only thing i can say in reply to that is that i wouldnt classify
ALL restaurants in that manner, some might actually know whats up and
be interested in getting the right atmosphere. i mean, if i was gonna
open a restaurant and had the $$ to do it, it would be awesome to have
a good deejay there. imagine being at a restaurant on a sunny day as
clouds roll in and then a rainstorm starts. the things you can do
musically to augment that while people are eating could be really
awesome! but really, you are in a better position to judge the spots
around you than anyone else....
