Hey James,
I've been back and forth from Detroit a few times filling up with about 80-100 records on my visit. The first time I came back to Sydney via NYC, Washington, Las Vagas, San Fran and LA. The second time was pretty much direct and have never had any problem with my records.

Maybe I'm a lucky one, but never had any complaints.

But I do always put a lock on my record box.

Good luck!

Peace,
Patrick.

is there any substance to these rumours?
anything i can do to minimise the risk of theft? i heard that baggage handlers
mistakenly think there are high end electronics in the boxes, and aren't after
records.
