hey 313

The D Wang interview jonny posted up got me thinking : there has been an
interesting trend away from the radical late 80's forward thinking 'machine
music' production/cultural ethic whereby sampling was seen as a radical
step forward and the rise of digital was seen as an empowering force
(*arguably* culminating in DJ Shadows Endtroducing sampling masterwork).
Nowadays, there is a whole host of backlash against such methods with the
'only real instruments can make real music' (or, analog is better becauase
it's more authentic somehow) type attitude creeping back into supposedly
'radical' forms, e.g. dance music (well, ok, some sectors of 'dance' music -
i hope my meaning is clear) - personally i find it a very conservative
viewpoint and, to an extent, exclusionary. I guess both views have always
existed to a degree, i'm just a little saddened to see some of the once
forward thinking dance scene talking like hoary old rock musicians about
authenticity and 'realness' - is this more a disco scene thing?. I am
genuinely curious. To make it 313 relevant explicitly : UR seem to push the
'no sampling' thing a bit, or at least to perhaps favour non-programmed
stuff - am i way off base here? - whereas someone like Moodymann seems to
take issue with 'who' does the sampling, not what is sampled. It's a long
way from the attitude which spawned something like Pump Up The Volume and
encouraged thousands of bedroom producers to make music....it seems to me
that some of the wide-eyed (no pun intended) optimism/enthusiasm/empowerment
angle of sampling and digital methods has been lost to a more 'this is how
you make *real* music' perspective.

I do, however, love Wangs work and see no contradiction in doing so (just to
ward off some of the inevitable reactionary posts).

Thoughts?
