Innerzone Orchestra featuring Carl Craig, The Herbaliser and Lamb might not yet be household names to most of America, but they can hardly be hailed as unrecognized in the dance music community, since all three acts are sure solid favorites. But what excels these artists beyond the narrow (sadly over) marginalized world of dance music however is the outstanding capacity of these acts to bring to the stage an energy and skill that can match any rock, jazz, funk, or for that manner, any kind of band. These acts re-define what live music is about in these last few months of pre-millennium hubbub. They take from the past but bring the new. They reach for a new sound and don¹t forget that at the same time they still need to entertain and captivate. >INNERZONE ORECHESTRA is a new project from Detroit based musical genius Carl Craig a long time favourite in Techno, House, breakbeat and electronica circles. Innerzone Orchestra is a special project for Craig. It's a summation of where he's been, and in these pre-millennium times, a pointer to where we may be headed. Besides Craig himself, the band also features ex-Sun Ra drummer Francisco Mora and jazz pianist Craig Taborn. Together (with a few additonal musicians) they have produced one of the year most adventurous and exciting records - ³Programmed² ( released by Astralwerks / Planet E late August). Their music combines Techno, Jazz, Funk and experimentalism into a heady new vibrant and fervent cocktail. This is truly music for the changing of the millenium. Craig explains "I felt that I¹d found the limits of techno music , but I still wanted to push the envelope.² Innerzone - ² It's spiritual and heady, but it's groovy too" Ninja Tune¹s >THE HERBALISER based around production duo Ollie Teeba and Jale Wherry, hail from London and apply their own distinct ideas about grooviness to their music too. Like Innerzone they¹re inspired by Jazz but more of the soundtrack variety. The Herbaliser might not be quite as avant-garde as Innerzone but as a hard edged funky, shake your booty eight-piece band, that features brilliant session cats like saxophonist Chris Bowden and keyboardist Kaidi Tatham, they sure know how to rock. Their excellent new album ³Mercenary² is out now. The last 2 years have witnessed the meteoric rise of >KRUST to his current status as one of the most exciting names on the music scene. His crucial involvement in Roni Size¢s Mercury Prize winning Reprazent project has brought him to a wider world stage, and the release of his long-awaited debut album "Coded Language" is likely to bring him to an even bigger audience. The result of years of hard work, the album unites his trademark tough, heavy sound with a vocal-orientated direction that takes the music to a whole new arena. >ROOTS MANUVA is one of the best British MC¹s to enter the world of hip-hop. Roots¹ rapping and production is as eloquent and skilled as any of his US conterparts. His debut album ³Brand New Second Hand² is out now on Big Dada / Ninja Tune. Roots will be joined by DJ-MK for his set and will also do a guest spot with The Herbaliser. Playful and adventourous > DJ RECLOOSE is from Detroit and is signed to Carl Craig¹s Planet E label (he¹ll also be performing with Innerzone) his eclectic and unique approach to beat sampling and manipulation has made him a sure favourite the world over. His new ep is out Sept 14th. British duo >GROOVE ARMADA are nice football loving lads who¹ve been causing quite a stir over the pond with their debut very diverse album ³Vertigo² (Jive Electro) features everything from deep house to big beat. This night will be their US offical US debut. They¹ll be spinning the kind of set that recently caused Fatboy Slim to hire them for his Wedding Party. Newcomer, Merz is hotly tipped as a name to watch by Muzik magazine in the UK. Merz takes a multitude of sounds from the global jukebox and mixes them up with off-kilter hip hop beats, tummy-rumbling basslines and sublime melodies, topped with a soaring voice. >The Heavyweight Art Installation is a crew of three visual artists from Montreal Canada. They recently created a series of paintings live at the DJ sessions during the Montreal Jazz Festival. These pictures created to sets by Thievery Corportaion, Carl Craig, Joe Clausell, Amon Tobin and others will be on display at The Roxy during this show. The trio will also be creating a new set of works live one for each act performing live throughout the night.
