I had the fortunate opportunity and pleasure to attend David Mancuso's Loft Party here in NYC last night. I gotta say it was something special, and it felt like I was part of something that mattered. The crowd was absolutely lovely, and eclectic to say the least: children, old people, hippies, funky people, faces of all colors, it was beautiful. Everyone came here with the intention of simply having a good time and dancing to great music. And the music, wow. David Mancuso played awesome music all night, he builds his set perfectly and plays every record from beginning to end. People would clap between songs and after a while you did not even notice that he wasn't "mixing" songs together. It flowed so perfectly. I recognized a handful of tunes, some sounded familiar but I could not identify them, others I had never heard and the older Puerto Rican guy next to me was singing the lyrics at the top of his lungs. And the sound was perfect. The sound system was so clear, every record sounded absolutely fantastic. It was not too loud, you could have a conversation without yelling, but if you moved to the center of the dance floor, you truly felt surrounded by the music. Ame's Rej sounded brilliant. For the most part I would say he played soulful disco, but he would play some cool, dark minimal track then drop some funky jam and the place would just erupt. As an example, after Rej he played Nick Straker's 'A Little Bit of Jazz' and everyone just ate it up. The first balloon drop occurred around 10:30 or so and I did not realize just how much people like to smack balloons around. Everyone in the place had a smile on their face and was getting down, as it should be.
Anyway, I wanted to share my excitement and experience. If you ever have the chance to go, do not miss. Worth every penny, and you still get a full night's sleep after. Adam
