Installing via the tarball can lead to dependency problems down the road - your rpm database won't know about any of those installs.

In that site, they have specified the following url, deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-389-directory-server/ppa/ubuntu/ karmic main deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-389-directory-server/ppa/ubuntu/ karmic main.
