The Philippine Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) issued this call yesterday to Metro Manila residents following a study showing that a 7.2 magnitude earthquake could hit the metropolis anytime and could kill at least 147,000 people in seconds. In an interview, PHI-VOLCS Director Renato Solidum said the study was conducted and sponsored by the Japan International Cooperation Agency in cooperation with the Metro Manila Development Authority and PHI-VOLCS. The study was done in August 2002 until August this year. "Base sa pag-aaral, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake could happen in Metro Manila. Given this, we need to assess and identify the structures that are most especially prone to earthquake," Solidum said. "The whole Metro Manila Solidun may probably be banking on the cyclical theory that earthquakes hit in 20-30 year cycles. By the way, a 6.8 temblor hit Japan last Saturday. The Japan-based JICA sponsored the PHI-VOCS study. will be affected. Walang exact time and it could happen anytime," he warned. Solidum cited in particular the earthquake felt in Metro Manila and other parts of Luzon last October 8. "Malayo ang source ng earthquake but still we felt the movement," he said. He said while PHI-VOLCS does not want to cause alarm, the more prepared the government, the lesser the impact of the earthquake. "The more populated the area, the more the people are being exposed," he said. To prevent this, Solidum said Metro Manila's buildings should be improved and its disaster management capability enhanced. He also urged local government units to identify old buildings which are prone to earthquake. He said that the estimate of 147,000 to be affected by a strong earthquake was based on assumptions that the earthquake would happen at night. "While medyo debatable 'yung figures, it was an estimate based on how many buildings and then ima-match in consideration at night time. It's a combination of number of deaths and injured," Solidum added. According to him, immediately after the 7.8-magnitude quake in July 1990 and the 1991 Mt. Pinatubo eruption, PHI-VOLCS monitored 1,400 movements with four big movements associated with it because of active faults. He said PHIVOLCS is conducting intensified activities on fault mapping to identify possible sources of the earthquakes.
