As a replacement (and much more) for the user mode, you should have a look at 
the Databrowser component:

Yes, 4D “broke” user mode sometime between v13.5 and v15.1.
I find the gymnastics you have to go through to display “raw data” records in 
v15 very frustrating too. It used to be so easy...
I trust there was a very good reason why 4D broke it, but have never seen an 
explanation of the reason(s).
