a new copy is created only if the original is older than v11.

the file is moved (renamed) to a folder named "Replaced Files..." and a new one
is created in its original location.
there is also a "detail" button on the bottom-left which allows to you to
decide whether to convert the 4DB only or both 4DB and 4DD.
it also allows you to change where the original copied to,
check the total size of data segments and the available disk space for the new
files to be created.
there is also a checkbox to skip the "On Startup" database method immediately
after conversion.
this is the large conversion dialog (with an image of blue blocks being piled
up).
you should really click the "detail" button if you get this dialog.

---

for all version after v11,
a standard dialog is displayed once for the 4DB and again for the 4DD,
and a different message is used for the structure and data.
there is no copy/rename of files involved so there are no options.
