David, I did a project in 2001 where I knew before I started that 4D could not handled the number of records in it’s database. I found Firebird and I also found someone who had written a plugin for 4D to speak to it.
Firebird is a very powerful, very versatile and is very SQL compliant, I loved it. I was also impressed with it’s ability to work as a local database (like SQLite). The plug-in however was a complete failure. After about 3 weeks of constantly feeding back issues to the developer he finally abandoned the project and I so I jumped ship and went with PostgreSQL and the plugin from the inestimable Rob Laveaux at Pluggers. At the time I was not comfortable with the ODBC offerings but I am sure that has improved. At the time I also asked Rob if he would consider doing a plugin for Firebird but having looked into it there were some technical issues that made him shy away. With 4D you would be able to do both a great web app but also have the option of creating smaller tactical desktop apps to connect if the web timescales start causing issues. Good luck with the project and keep us posted. Regards, Dougie ________________________________________________________ telekinetix Limited- J.
