I posted the question after I had given up the struggle. As soon as I had posted the question - and therefore I thought that I would not have to struggle anymore - I thought I would take one more look anyway.
That was was when I noticed that the ‘Locked’ checkbox in the Info panel was ticked. How? Dunno. Why? Dunno. Was it me? No (perhaps that should be Dunno as well, on the basis that with so much these days I dunno. And you can’t say if you don’t know.) But to get to the point, I unticked the Locked box. Problem gone, sorry for wasting your time folks.
