After the last big company router stopped getting software and security updates, I switched to using routers that support pfSense. It is a highly regarded open source router implementation which includes OpenVPN. Lots of hardware options are available including running it on your own. Here is a place to start. Just be sure to ask which hardware options support gigabit WAN. I know the lowest end option they have maxes out well below 1000 Mbs.
