a whacky alternative would be:

WP EXPORT DOCUMENT + wk web page complete and parse the XHTML (or count the 
number of attachments)

working directly with XHTML is also quite useful to setup a preconfigured 
document with non-default settings.
you can then pass the XHTML to WP New.
