lsmod |grep rt
lsmod |grep 80211

Are any modules listed when you run the previous commands.

Never heard of it.  I am guessing that it is some sort of user space
application that manages your connections?  Anyway, it looks like the
kernel you are using does not have the drivers for your device.  The
short answer is use a different kernel.  If you compiled it yourself you
will have to enable some more drivers.
