In both installs, /var/lib/dbus/machine-id was replaced by a sequence of 33 random bytes, which prevented dbus from starting. I had to generate it again with dbus- uuidgen.
After this fix, the 32-bit version no longer crashes on X startup, while the 64-bit one still does. My machine is an Intel Core 2 Quad on Asus P5Q Pro MB.
