Hi Jonathan,

Right, Free Software is all about putting control back in the hands of
the user.

We're always open to collaboration, that's a big part of our model.
Please mail me off-list if you have something specific in mind.

Up to a point - even if you build your own audio card, you are still
reliant on the chipset vendor to some extent. On the other hand, Intel
have been very supportive, and with HDMI we now have a multichannel
digital interconnect that supports up to 192KHz sampling.

It's true that driver development needs on-going investment. The ALSA
team is small compared to the size of its userbase and the number of new
devices on the market each year, and both key developers are employed by
a company with no interest in pro audio. However, sponsorship of driver
development is possible.

We're aiming for the best of both worlds, by creating open appliances
while also providing Free Software distros for general-purpose machines.

Cheers!

Daniel
