Hi Dave :)

I guess the fan is controlled by the BIOS and not by the kernel or any
Linux application, I guess it's an ACPI function.

I don't think that ACPI is turned off. I'm still with 64 Studio 2.1 and
here my dual core always runs with full speed, while for my Suse the CPU
speed is managed to fit the load.

If the CPU always runs on full speed, the CPU gets warmer and the fan
will run faster. I guess this is the reason why your CPU is running
faster, while you are using 64 Studio. It's possible to change this, but
maybe it's better for audio performance to run the CPU always with
highest frequency.

Cheers,
Ralf

Betreff: [64studio-users] noise suppression ?

Greetings,

I'm getting excellent audio and video results from 3.0 beta2. I've
built, installed, and tested Csound 5.10.1 with fairly complex realtime
audio output. No xruns at all with my UA25 and Daniel's suggested
settings (8 msecs latency). Great work, my compliments to the chefs.

However, one last niggle remains (well, maybe it's the last one). My
machine also runs Ubuntu 8.10 from another partition on the disk, and it
runs much quieter with Intrepid than with 64 Studio's Hardy . Is there a
CPU fan control in use in 8.10 that wasn't in Hardy ? Can someone
explain why this is happening and/or suggest a fix ? I can live with it,
but the noise is aggravating.

Best,

dp
