This might be solvable by

But getting a bootable stick after restoring a hard disk like install
back from a backup to the USB stick is still a puzzle for me.

I can't see that my actual install is using extlinux (syslinux), I guess
the MBR points to GRUB. For some kinds of install I found howtos for
restoring the USB stick's MBR, but not for a hard disk like install.

What I want to do is, backup my install and format the stick again.

I now have the 1. partition formated to ext3 and the 5. partition as
swap and I wish to have the first partition resized and formated to
FAT32 and the 5. partition resized and formated to ext2.

After this is done, I'll restore (resp. copy) the install to the ext2
partition. Up to that point I might be able to do it.

Does anybody know how to get the stick bootable again? Maybe by
disconnecting the hard disks and rewriting the MBR pointing at GRUB, by
an rescue option, that might be on the 64 Studio 3.0-beta2 install CD?
