Hi list,

running 64Studio 2.1, these last 2 days pc reboots without warning. All
the times it appears, only Jack and Ardour are running. Rest of jobs
never provide any boot, just Ardour and Jack.

Kernel is 2.6.21-1-multimedia486, Jackd is 0.116.1 with Qjackctl 0.3.4,
Ardour is 2.7.1(4296).

Maximum session time before reboot is around 15 minutes, sometimes I
just launch the session, select a track, double click on its insert,
move any cursor in the insert settings popup, and then reboot come. Most
of the times, reboot appears when I close an insert popup window. D'on't
understand at all what's happening :

HELP !

Any advice will be really appreciate, any "see what this log says" will
be really welcome, Please, Fred

Hi Fred :)

even if it's a shot in the dark:

# ps aux | grep cron

Run Memtest and post /var/log/syslog.

I don't have any idea, but I guess someone from the list might help you
after reading syslog.

Cheers,
Ralf

PS: Because of a worst case scenario, do you have a backup of the latest
running 64 Studio?

One of my unwanted mails after the original mail ;):

Does any drive sound strange? Such reboots sometimes happen when e.g. a
HD drive or DVD drive is broken.

Pardon another mail.

You are able to run e.g. Icedove and Icewasel for hours without any
forced restart? The reboot only happens when using Ardour? If so, can
you downgrade Ardour?

Sorry, a last shot in the dark:

Did you try to add something like

acpi=off

to the GRUB entry? Just to see what will happen.

That will likely lead to a lot of xruns and weird behaviour that have
nothing to do with the problem at hand.

I am more interested in the heat generated by this machine.  A CPU under
load generates far more heat than an idle one.  I wonder what happens if
he loads Ardour and then does nothing.

The things I would check are the CPU Fan/Heatsink and the power supply.
These two probably account for more than 90% of the "random" reboots
that I see.

Hi Fred,

I put some comments and tips on the forums.  I agree with Gustin that it
looks like an hardware issue.

Cheers,
Quentin
