So everyone doesn't think that I am really reading and trying to evaluate and
learn from what you say I am enclosing my To Do List. Sorry didn't have time
to work on these to day like I thought I would.
If you heard a load scream earlier today it probably was me running the Live
AVLINUX. Spent all day yesterday down loading. Then burnt the DVD today and
fired it up. EVERYTHING except sound came up. Even the wireless. I think I
have the same problem with sound that is there is an External Amplifier
selected and I need to find out how to do that. But that is a later task.
All the software is loaded, had no problems getting my printer to work and all
the apps that are loaded!!!!! So I am going to see if I can get through my To
Do List and then work on it. The list will teach me a lot more. Back at you
guys later.

An easier GUI version is
"gnome-system-monitor". If you add the System
Monitor
to your Gnome panel (right click, add to panel) you will get a
CPU
graph. Clicking on that graph will launch the
gnome-system-monitor.
In the processes tab you can right click on
a given process to pause,
resume, or kill the process. There
are some other actions available to
you as well.

Let me explore this later today and
I'll check back and tell you how it works for me. Especially if I
have any troubles.

You can run commands and launch
applications directly from this window.
Ralph was tying to get you
to launch the terminal program from the
ALT-F2 window instead of
the menu. Both methods work fine. Use
whichever you
prefer.

Thanks. I kind of had that feeling.
Except in a terminal window I get to see the whole ball of wax in one
window.

OK. In that
case you could try installing Kdenlive via Synaptic
just to see
what it looks like. If I remember correctly the
version available for 9.10
is pretty recent, and seemed on my
short tests to be "getting there", though
it may still
not be as stable as we would want. See Dave's earlier email for
a more detailed review he did.
You could also look at
OpenShot (http://www.openshotvideo.com).
I don't think
this is in the default 9.10 repositories yet, so
I'm NOT suggesting you
install it, since you have to go through a
few additional steps to get
Synaptic to download it from their
archive:
http://www.openshotvideo.com/2008/04/ppa-instructions.html
>>>>>>>>>>>>>
I will look at this later today. I'm
not sure what Kdenlive is in reference to – ALSA; GNOME sound mixer
etc..
Also I need to read up on
Openshotvideo. But thanks for the pointers. Not sure how you folks
find all these sites but it sure is a BIG BIG help.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
This was why I asked about what distro
you were using. The JACK point applies
only to 64Studio,
since it is not a default on 9.10.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Yep figured this out. Somewhere in my
distant past I worked where we helped folks with software. Nice to
know all the ins and outs. Also DON”T what ever one does is
change the original default settings unless given specific
instruction to. So I'm with you.
>>>>>>>>>>
Plainly, we need to get sound on the video as displayed in Avidemux.
Firstly,
is there sound when you play the unedited .vro
files in the media player you
used earlier? If so,
can you try opening Avidemux, and going to Edit ->
Preferences
-> Audio. What do you have showing in the Audio Output
dropdown?
Try putting ALSA there, with "dmix" in the
ALSA Device field below. Does that
make any difference?
Try putting Pulse Audio in the Audio Output dropdown.
Any
change?
>>>>>>>>>
I can answer the first question right
now. Yes the video plays with sound from the .vro file through
mplayer the default player in Ubuntu.
I'll Get the rest later today. Boy I'm
going to be busy.

Hmmm.
9.10 is using Pulse Audio by default, and not everyone is happy with
it. It may be the culprit here. Try the above
experiments first, and
report.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>
I have some serious reservations about
this. In order to get pulse audio to work in any way I have a whole
bunch of software to add. At least based on the stuff I read.
Finally a young man, college student, in Portals, NM stated sound
should work without adding any software. So go vanilla and finally
added the GNOME ALSA MIXER in order to find the External Amplifier
that needed to be turned on. Guess what “I have sound”.
Finally I will forget about that JACK
thing. I checked didn't have any flat tires so no need to JACK
anything up at this time. ( I love the English language. One can
have such a play on words).

Yesno ;) ... you used Avidemux to
encode a VCD or VDVD ... after doing
this you can install an
application named "K3b". After installing and
launching
K3b go to the menu "File > New Project > New Video DVD
Project
or New Video CD Project".
You only need to
copy your files by drag'n'drop. For a VCD you only need
to copy
the MPEG files and for a VDVD I guess you need to copy VOB files
into the VIDEO_TS folder, but for DVDs you should take a look at
ManDVD
or 2ManDVD. But now I don't have the time to explain it.
Test it with
making a VCD, you only need to follow the advices
K3b will give you.
Hth,
Ralf
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Will try the VCD as suggested and get
back to you on the results. Thanks.

I can make guesses as to most of these, but they might be wrong, so
rather
than mislead you, I'll send you to the app's website.
The wiki has a lot of
info on
it:

and
there are forums:

where
cleverer people than I will probably give you better answers.

I'll go read that after I get done this
“To Do List”.
Yes I found out about Dan's Book. But
I'll keep watch for it at Amazon.com.

Kevin Donnelly wrote about Pulse Audio.
Kevin is right. Pulse
Audio for most real-time audio users is unwanted. I would suggest
that we help Albert to get rid of Pulse Audio, but however a question
to the list ... Might there be the need for Albert to keep Pulse
Audio? I guess he won't do real-time audio recordings and maybe Pulse
Audio has an advantage for users that I'm not able to spot. I guess
there are some issues when running JACK and non real-time
applications at the same time. Dunno if JACK might be interesting for
Albert, perhaps the day will come when he wants to use JACK transport
e.g. for OpenMovieEditor and an audio application, even if I don't
think so.
>>>>>>>>>>>>
Now you guys need to have a little
compassion for an old guy. I spent three weeks working that pulse
stuff and never did get sound working. So I used vanilla Ubuntu and
the GNOME alsa mixer and everything works fine. I would like to find
out how to keep that check mark for the External Amp from being set
every time I reboot.
Every one have a good day at work while I sleep LOL LOL
