Kevin suggested installing Kdenlive.  I tried but couldn't figure out how to
use it.  Thus could not conclude wether it would support the sound system.

Opening Avidemux preferences audio.  Down Mix is set to Pro Logic
                                                          Audio Device
ALSA
Drop down menu options.  Down Mix  -->  No down mix;  Stereo;  Pro Logic;  Pro
Logic II
Audio Device --> Dummy;  ALSA;  OSS;  sdl

Gustin Johnson suggested using the gnome-system-monitor and putting it in the
task bar.  Wonderful idea I love it and have to use it a couple of times
already.

Ralf suggested some encoding from Avidemux using K3b to burn a DVD.  But since
I don't have a complete film -- picture and sound -- I have not tried this at
all yet.

Some interesting observations:
Ubuntu "thinks" the ".vro" file is really an mpeg.  Not surprised though.

Every time I boot I must go to gnome alsa  mixer and turn off the external
amplifier.  If I don't NOTHING has any sound.

Avidemux:  drag and drop original .VRO file.  Asked if I wanted it Indexed. I
said YES. Pressed the PLAY button.  "Trouble Initializing Device"  Clicked OK
then video plays but NO SOUND.
My guess is that Avidemux is looking for the wrong audio device BUT I have no
idea what should be changed.  As you will see ALL other editors will play with
sound.

LiVES:  Preview plays both video and sound.  Very difficult to figure out how
to cut and paste sections.  The Manual leaves a lot - and I mean an awful lot -
to be desired.  I'd prefer a package that I can learn sometime before I cross
the rainbow bridge.

PiTiVi:  Same a LiVES.  Except I couldn't do anything at all with this package
except do a preview and you get both video and sound.

Kdenlive:  By this time I think my brain was so fried I couldn't accomplish
anything with this package.

Summary:-----
If I could find a tutorial such as the one Kevin provided except for LiVE
might be the best solution.  The basics of this software seems to work but I
can't figure out how to manipulate the video and insert simple text or titles.
Second choice would be to get Avidemux working with sound.  Not sure if I can
add simple text but I have already been able to cut and paste video.  It seems
to be very simple to use.  I will try to get on the avidemux forum and see if
they can help with the Audio issues.

Off the topic questions.
AVLinux implies that it a 32 bit system but uses 64 bit functions.  Have I
understood this correctly???

Will 64 Studio only run on a 64 bit machine?  How similar is it to AVLinux?
Would it be wise to go to another distro at this time?
