Dear 6lo Working Group, I would like to introduce an Internet-Draft, draft-hanley-rsdggs, and seek feedback on its application to constrained link layers and network bootstrapping.
Draft: https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-hanley-rsdggs/ Title: Regulatory Spectrum Discrete Global Grid System (RSDGGS) --- Alignment with 6lo Charter --- Deploying low-power, constrained IoT nodes across regional boundaries presents a recurring challenge: sub-GHz radio spectrum parameters (frequency sub-bands, maximum EIRP, duty cycle, and dwell time) vary strictly by regulatory jurisdiction. Unprovisioned or mobile 6lo nodes often lack GPS receivers or the memory capacity to store global regulatory tables. RSDGGS solves this by defining a hierarchical global spatial grid compressed into a 1-to-8 octet byte array. In direct relation to 6lo: 1. Section 14 defines a compact IEEE 802.15.4 Information Element (IE) container to broadcast location and regulatory context in MAC-layer beacons. 2. Section 7 defines a CBOR wire encoding for constrained payloads. 3. It enables constrained nodes to dynamically adapt physical/MAC layer parameters before initiating 6LoWPAN neighbor discovery or network attachment. --- About the Author --- My background includes over two decades of engineering leadership in embedded systems, wireless networking, and spatial computing, including founding Myelin Networks and leading hardware/firmware design for constrained mesh devices. This draft builds on practical experience with sub-GHz link-layer constraints and automated device provisioning. --- Request for Input --- I would welcome feedback from the 6lo community on: - The design and efficiency of the IEEE 802.15.4 IE container for MAC-layer regulatory bootstrapping. - Whether standardized CBOR/IE containers for spatial regulatory context represent a useful direction for 6lo's constrained link-layer scope. Thank you for your time and feedback. Thanks much, Take care, James Patrick Hanley Myelin Networks LLC [email protected]
