Having a router in between seems sensible to me. You can get uIPv6 somewhere
small, so I don't see having a simple router as a big problem...

It isn't so much about the size or complexity of the software, but of the architectural implications. Having an additional IP stack between the IP stack and the link layer seems fundamentally backwards.
