The issues with 802.15.4-2006 ACKs are widely known (security,
inability to nack, etc.). Waiting for the 802.15.4e TG to fix these
issues (and then waiting for silicon vendors to implement those
changes) is going to be a long process (if you've been following the
discussions, it's already a big can of worms). Properly supporting
security has already opened a big can of worms w.r.t. timing
constraints, timeline to implement in hardware, etc. Defining an
optional 6lowpan-layer ACK would solve many of these problems.
