Hi all,

I'm wondering if the cell scheduled for the minimal configuration
should be ADVERTISING in terms of macLinkType rather than NORMAL.

The definition of LinkType can be found in Table 8-46 of IEEE
802.15.4-2015. This is a table about MLME-SET-LINK.request
parameters. It says:

Set to ADVERTISING if the link is to be used to advertise the
  network, otherwise set to NORMAL.

As we all know, the cell scheduled for the minimal configuration is
used for network advertisement; EBs are sent over the cell.

I did some research why NORNAL has been chosen for the cell, and found
the definition by IEEE 802.15.4e-2012 is a bit different to IEEE
802.15.4-2015. See Table 44f of IEEE 802.15.4e-2012, which is also a
table about MLME-SET-LINK.request parameters:

Type of link. NORMAL = 0. ADVERTISING = 1, and indicates the link
may be used to send an Enhanced beacon.

macLinkType has been introduced to the minimal configuration table
since draft-ietf-6tisch-minimal-01. Here is a relevant email found in
the ML archive, which was posted on June 8, 2014:

  https://mailarchive.ietf.org/arch/msg/6tisch/eF_eNIPw51UNwdv3P90qn1JMWqc

after friday discussion it seems that having:

1) variable size slotframes and the size being announced in the EBs
2) 1 active cell (slotted aloha) having linkOption set at RX,TX,SHARED
3) The linkType for that cell can be NORMAL and it is not required to be
ADVERTISMENT despite EBs will also be sent on that cell.

I would like to ask if everybody agrees on that approach and whether not
having a dedicated ADV cell but sending EBs in a NORMAL link is possible.

At that time, before IEEE 802.15.4-2015, it was fine to make the cell
NORMAL. I agree. But, is it still fine? Should we change the value of
macLinkType in Table 1 to ADVERTISING, or not?

Best,
Yatch
