Hey Gang,
A little while ago I posted to 909 about the performance problems I was
having with Windows XP SP2 when the box prints through Samba. I tried
different versions of Samba, had Samba use cups instead
of /etc/printcap, used IPs instead of names and Disabled NetBIOS over
TCP/IP, but none fixed the slowness that SP2 apparently introduced.
Since then, a few work-arounds have been posted on the net. The first
one is a registry hack that I have had some luck with. http://www.mail-
archive.com/[email protected]/msg48978.html says to basically delete
all entries for the slow printer(s) from the keys "DevModes2" and
"DevModePerUser" in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Printers\Connections. This speeds
up printing, but with one drawback, if a user changes the default
settings for the printer a registry entry is put back in with this
change and the printing becomes slow again.
The second option I will be trying this week. According to MicroSoft at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893225, printing performance problems
occur after you install Windows XP Service Pack 2! This hotfix can be
obtained by contacting Microsoft Product Support Services. It will be
interesting to try this update to see if all aspects of printing through
Samba return to normal.
