Well, for switches you could use SNMP for a lot of that.. you'd have to
look up the MIBs on cisco's website to find out what fields to query,
but most of the hardware, uptime, description info is obtainable through
SNMP... you could use the snmp utils for linux to write a script
querying a database of IPs.

For windows machines you'll either need to download an SNMP responder or
use WMI. Novell has SNMP support as an option as well.

MRTG is a great little linux program that supports SNMP querying,
monitoring, and statistical analysis. You may wish to give it a try!

Subject: [909linux] Change control

I am looking for an open source application (web
based) that allows one to describe and document all
the the componets of a server or cisco switch. Also,
the application needs a change control feature.

I would like to document the following items and more:

1. Hostname
2. Dns Name
3. Description and purpose of the item
4. OS Type
5. Hardware features (ram; disk type/size, etc)
6. Date of last change
7. What was the change
8. Location of item
9. Comment field
10. etc.

Thank you for your time and help!
