You might want to check if the filename it's referencing is merely a
soft link to a more specific version, i.e.,

/usr/lib/gcc/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.4.4/libstdc++.so.6 -> libstdc++.so.6.0.3

(at least that's how it is on my system)

Point being: changing the permissions on a soft link won't change the
permissions on the target.  Every time I do certain emerges, I have to
"chmod +x" several of the scripts in /etc/init.d for some reason.  The
permissions for net.eth0 are left unchanged (777), but because it is
only a soft link to net.lo it still won't run because the permissions
for net.lo got hosed by the update.  This becomes quite annoying at times.
