I think the Linux desktop is headed down the same path, just at a more conservative pace. The hot thing right now is XGL. It has all the 3d desktop stuff and you need a decent Nvidia or ATI card to take advantage of it. With the recent release of OpenSuse 10.1, the XGL is included with the OS. It just isn't turned on by default. Redhat has AIGLX, a similar technology to XGL, which will most likely be included with FC6 and RHEL 5. Chris
