The few times I've looked for decent 1U servers, I've always been
impressed with eRacks.com, at least by looking at their web site. I do
have to admit I've never ordered from them, but then again, I just don't
buy much hardware either... so while I can't comment on the quality of
the product, I can say they *appear* to have a decent product.

I can say from looking at their web site, not only do they understand
how to do a basic Linux install, they can do all flavors of Linux (well
they don't have gentoo on their list, but you could probably ask for it
if you really really wanted it), *BSD, etc... and they build some very
nice solution-style racks for specific servers (DNS, firewall, proxy,
etc...) or for Tape Backup / NAS machines, etc...

They have a pretty decent selection of 1U cases, (short, half,
rear-mount, etc...) which aren't the most beautiful cases in the world
to look at, but supposedly are fairly quiet and solidly built.

They also donate $5 from each purchase to your choice of: the EFF,
OpenBSD Project, or an open source project of your choice. That's cool.

As far as "affordable" I'm not sure what your price range is, but they
have standard 1U servers with starting prices from $795 (Athlon) to $845
(Celeron or Pentium-M) and obviously that price would go up as you add
options.

One of these days, I'm going to try and order a half-length,
front-socketed ultra-quiet 1U from them that I could mount in a
music-equipment rack for me to use for Audio and MIDI processing. I've
never found a 1U rack that's quiet enough for studio use, but they use
the VIA C3's in some of their racks, and those don't need a fan.

One of the things I Don't see on their site is any option to build a
system with an Intel Core2 Duo setup. They should have that available
by now.

Has anyone ever worked with eRacks? Or, if Roger or anyone else does
buy a 1U server anywhere, can you send a summary on to the list because
I'm doing some comparison shopping too.
