USCLUG -- MARCH MEETING
******************************

Topic: Using OpenWRT on a Linksys WRT54GL
Speaker: Ted Faber
Date & Time: March 22, 2007, 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM
Location: VKC 203
Cost: Free to members and general public

Topic Summary:

This talk will discuss how to burn the Open Source OpenWRT firmware onto a
Linksys WRT54GL and configure that router for fun and profit. The
WRT54GL is an off the shelf Linksys wireless router that houses a 5 port VPN
switch and a 802.11G wireless interface. OpenWRT is a Linux kernel and
system that can be used to configure the router as a router, DHCP server,
name server, firewall and many other systems. It runs a web
server and supports a web interface.

Topics covered will include:

Getting and installing the OpenWRT code
The basic architecture of the router
Configuring the router using the web interface
Using the Linux command line and ssh to configure the router

>From the 110 Southbound

Exit Adams
Go straight, you'll hit Figueroa, take a right (south)
Pass Adams
Pass Jefferson and turn right into Gate 3 Park in the parking structure to
the left, there is a $6 charge

After you park

Once you've parked exit the parking structure the way you came in, and turn
left (i.e. away from the gate). Walk along the path and you'll be walking
toward three buildings. The one slightly to the left of the end of the path
is VKC, it has red brick, and a tall tower on top of the building with a
large golden globe on the top of the tower. On the right of VKC is SOS, it's
very short, and to the right of that is a very tall building. Right behind
these buildings is THH (Taper Hall of Humanities). This is the building you
want. It's very long, and L-shaped. Towards the right is an overhang and
some glass doors, go in there and follow the signs to the correct room.
Rooms beginning with 1 are on ground level, rooms beginning with 2 are
upstairs.
