A friend of a friend has a *nix-based server that's locking up or

Aside from asking him what he did (or didn't do) software- or
hardware-wise, I'm not sure the best way to methodically go through
and figure out the one (more multiple) causes.
Look at /etc/syslog.conf to see where messages are stored. Generally
it is /var/log/messages. In any case open it up and search backwards
for 'restart' for Syslog. Immediately before that you will see the
last things logged before the crash, hopefully. This can lead you to
what might be causing the problem.
Also I recommend installing Logwatch. Setup a cron job for it to run
like once a day and email you the last 24 hours of info. Its pretty
handy.
